Ford was definitely not kidding when they announced that they were going more into the truck and SUV game and that they were going to focus on it more. We’ve seen the all-new, Bronco and Bronco Sport, the F-150 Lightning, and the Explorer Timberline. Now, the all-new Ford Maverick has arrived.

Just when you think that Ford was done revolutionizing trucks, the all-new Ford Maverick shows up with a lot of features that even non-truck owners would take a second look at. This vehicle may seem to be a compact truck but it offers so much more. Ford clearly focused on a target market that would benefit from this one.

What the Ford Maverick Offers

The New Ford Maverick is a compact four-door passenger truck with a standard hybrid front-wheel drive, 40 miles per gallon capacity, and an SRP of $19,995. It’s a truck that costs less than $20,000. Pretty incredible indeed. Ford seemed to build this compact truck for the city market, the maker, the tinkerer, somebody who needs to haul stuff but not a lot for towing and not for heavy off-road use. The Ford Maverick comes with a signature area 51 gray-blue color that looks pretty cool.

External Features

Now, let’s discuss what this compact truck can do, down to the specs. The Maverick has a 121-inch wheelbase, curb weight of 3700 lbs, front and rear independent suspension, 4 and a half foot bed, and 8.3 inches of ground clearance. The off-road package comes with 8.6 inches of ground clearance. The off-road package also comes with underbody skid plates, upgraded wheels and tires, and all of the off-road modes that the Ford Bronco sport offers.

Drivetrain, Horsepower, Fuel and Towing Capacity

The Ford Maverick has a standard hybrid drivetrain. The 2.5-liter hybrid can give 191 hybrid horsepower. That is the gas and the electric motor’s combined horsepower. It also features 2,000 lbs towing capacity, a 500-mile range, and it can accommodate 40 miles per gallon. When you think about it, that’s not too bad for hybrid trucks, especially at this size. It will have an appeal to the right market.

If you’re someone who still wants a gas motor, don’t worry because you’ve got the 2-liter EcoBoost. This is quite smaller compared to what the Ranger has but it comes with 250 horsepower, 277 foot-pounds of torque. This also improves your towing capacity to 4,000 lbs. Not bad for a little Ford Maverick indeed.

Flex Bed System

Now, it’s time to talk about the bed. The Ford Maverick comes with a 4 and a half foot bed with 1,500 lbs of payload capacity. This compact truck’s bed has enough room for a full-size ATV or 18 sheets of 4×8 plywood. You read that right, 18 sheets! Its tailgate bends up and even gets it over the hump. Ford really considered the people that would be running back and forth to the hardware store for small projects around the house. They also probably considered hobbyists or tinkerers as this is not a bad option for them.

Ford included a so-called Flex Bed System that comes with 12-bed anchor points, 220-volt outlets, a multi-position tailgate, and lumber slots to divide the bed up. A bottle opener is also on the bed and that is one notable feature indeed. Ford really thought well about the market for the Maverick. Just to make it clear, you won’t be able to get any of this from a Ford Escape or from a Bronco Sport, which is basically the same platform this is on.

Tech and Interiors

The Ford Maverick has 120-volt outlets and under-seat storage which is standard for pick-up trucks. This truck also has an 8-inch touchscreen, standard with android auto and Apple car play. That’s actually standard for every Ford model, so you don’t have to pay for that.

The interior of the Ford Maverick is quite impressive. This truck has a standard interior but with lots of colors, lots of different fabrics, and textures. Ford is probably trying to target someone that wants a little trendier and a little hipper kind of truck, especially those who may not have had a truck before and would like something that looks nice on the inside and be utilitarian and perform on the outside. This is what should entice first-time truck owners.

Key Takeaways

If you want something that does not have to be serious off-road and does not have to tow a ton but you want to keep all of those options open, plus flexibility, and you want a neat interior with all the technology, the Ford Maverick is not a bad truck for you.

It’s definitely not a full-size pick-up but this new and compact option is available for those who have not even considered a truck for once in their lives and are opening their minds to the possibility of a new, hip, and savvy vehicle for daily use. The all-new Ford Maverick has opened a lot of doors and has redefined the old outlook about what a truck is. This compact truck packs a lot of punch and power along with aesthetic appeal and practical features. Ford has definitely taken the right step on this one.
